Combermere Barracks is the historic base of the Royal Horse Guards, and the current home of the Household Cavalry Regiment. The barracks feature a dedicated training wing where Soldiers learn military equitation, riding, and husbandry.
A 60m x 30m Riding Arena used to practice formation riding required a lighting upgrade to ensure visibility during Autumn/Winter training sessions. Kellwood Lighting supported in upgrading the barrack's arena to a modern, energy-efficient, low-maintenance solution.
Relatively common and unusual requirements needed to be considered:
Lux Levels – design and supply a lighting solution to cater for formation riding activities.
Existing Layout – use existing column/electrical connections to mitigate any re-wiring requirements and minimise installation costs.
Low Glare – position lights appropriately to provide sufficient coverage and reduce glare that might impair visibility.
Design Process
Consultation with Combermere Barracks highlighted that a modest level of illumination was required to support evening and low-light Formation practices.
After evaluating various design scenarions through photometric simulations, it was concluded that a 4-Column solution using Kellwood's 310W McFarlane Series would deliver on the client's lux level, uniformity, and glare requirements.
