Energise, the City of York Council’s award-winning community hub and state-of-the-art sports facility, required a modern lighting solution that addressed energy efficiency, operational flexibility, and user experience. With amenities ranging from a gym and climbing wall to a swimming pool and sports hall, the facility needed a system that could adapt to varied activities while reducing energy consumption.
Kellwood Lighting was approached to design and deliver a tailored system that would meet these specific needs.
Kellwood Lighting developed a bespoke solution by upgrading all lighting products with DALI drivers and dividing the primary sports hall into four quadrants. This allowed site employees to control each zone’s lighting output via a central, wall-mounted dimming control system. The design enabled Energise to perfectly balance energy savings with the specific activity being pursued, from high-performance sports to general recreation.
By working closely with the City of York Council, Kellwood ensured the solution not only met technical requirements but also aligned with the facility’s operational objectives. The combination of flexible lighting controls and high-performance LED technology created a forward-looking system that delivered measurable benefits.
The results were clear and measurable. Energise achieved energy and carbon savings of 53%, an expected installation lifetime of over 8 years, and average annual savings of £6,840, equating to 146 tonnes of CO₂ savings across the system’s lifetime. The facility also benefited from significantly improved lighting levels, reduced maintenance demands, and minimal disruption during installation.
