Hazardous Area Tank Farm

Overview

Kellwood Lighting was approached to support a client operating a petrochemical tank farm in the Middle East. The client required a robust and effective flood lighting solution for a large fully operational site.

With strict safety classifications and existing mast infrastructure in place, the project demanded ATEX-certified equipment and a straightforward installation approach.

Challenges

The site posed several challenges common to hazardous area operations. First and foremost, safety was paramount: all equipment had to be fully ATEX-certified to ensure compliance with international standards for hazardous environments.

The client also required consistent, reliable floodlighting across the expansive site, with fixtures mounted on existing high mast infrastructure. They wanted to avoid mixing different product types or optics and instead preferred a streamlined, uniform system that would be easier to specify, install, and maintain.

Finally, they needed support with the export process, and a phased delivery approach to match their on-site installation capacity.

Solution

Kellwood Lighting supplied approximately 200 pieces of the 300W Stanford Series floodlight, chosen for its balance of performance, efficiency, and value. The Utility 120° optic was specified to deliver precise, wide-area illumination, ensuring uniform light coverage across the site without over-lighting or wasted energy.

To comply with hazardous area requirements, the fittings were supplied with M20 inlet threads and ATEX-certified glands. This ensured full compatibility with site standards and offered the client peace of mind on compliance.

Installation was simplified thanks to the Stanford Series’ universal mounting brackets, allowing engineers to rotate and tilt each light as required. The solution was delivered in two phases, supporting the client’s schedule and ensuring the lighting could be installed in line with operational needs.

Results

The client now benefits from an optimised, good-value floodlighting system that is safe, compliant, and efficient. By standardising on a single model and optic, maintenance is simpler, stockholding is reduced, and consistency of light levels is guaranteed across the site.

With the support of Kellwood Lighting’s export expertise, the project was delivered smoothly and on time. Most importantly, the client reported high levels of satisfaction with both the quality of the products and the ease of installation – a testament to Kellwood’s customer-focused approach and reputation for delivering practical, reliable industrial lighting solutions.
